Healthy Foods for Unhealthy Conditions

Healthy Foods and Proper Food Combining

Pictures Are Worth a Thousand Words!

healthy foods - organic fruits and veggies

Healthy foods – when combined properly and used consistently – can have wonderful illness-prevention properties and may reduce bloating, gas, reflux, and other yucky symptoms!

I found a great site, Shape-Able.com. which elaborates on several kinds of foods that are best to address specific conditions. I encourage you to go to their site. However, I’ll share a few of their pictures (with permission) to give you examples. Then, you’ll know it’s worth the time to investigate more on their website!

I am not a nutritionist. Most of the classes I teach are about personal or professional development and other ways of being or becoming healthy. Examples include setting boundaries, self-care, stress reduction, meditation, working with chakras, “energy work” – like Reiki, and learning techniques for changing fears and limiting beliefs so that you can meet your personal and professional goals. However, I KNOW THAT “WE ARE WHAT WE EAT,” so I want to share this great information with you. If you want to know more about my specialties, see the Contact Us info at the end of this blog or email me at GetWellStayWell@outlook.com. Do yourself a favor, though, and see the healthy food info below first.

Muscle Cramps and Magnesium

Muscle Cramp Symptoms

Athlete rolling on the grass - in pain because of leg cramps. Image by Shauking

Most muscle cramps (sudden sharp and lasting pains) develop in the leg muscles, particularly in the calf. The unlucky victim may also feel or see a hard lump beneath the skin. It is a “seizing” or  “bunching” of muscle tissue, and it doesn’t happen only to athletes. Furthermore, I usually get cramps in my feet and toes. Some people get spasms in their backs. IT HURTS!!!! Consequently, I explored why we get cramps and what to do about them. Then, I thought I might as well share the wealth of information with you!

Below, we’ll explore a few causes and solutions, based largely on publications by the Mayo Clinic, Harvard Medical School, and Healthline. As usual, I’m sharing food images, especially for people for whom English is not a first language or who have dyslexia or other impediments to reading easily.

Important: the content on this site should never be used as a substitute for direct medical advice from your doctor or other qualified clinicians.

FREE ROOT CHAKRA MEDITATION

Why a FREE Root Chakra Meditation?

Because lots of us are feeling scattered, harried, harassed, and not at home in our own bodies, given all the stressors these days, that’s why! We need help, and I can provide some.

keyboard with red key and word, "Help" I can help with the Free Root Chakra Meditation that I'm sharing with you here and now.

Recently, I’ve been teaching an intensive course called “Chakras With Benefits. It is among many classes I teach on Zoom.

First, in case you don’t know about them, here is a link to describe chakras (in great detail, because it takes you to Deepak Chopra’s site.  emoji laughing so hard that tears come

He’s  a prolific writer, teacher, physician, metaphysician, and spiritual guru, who combines an understanding of Eastern and Western medicine and metaphysics in educating people throughout the world.)

“…With Benefits?”

I used the term, “With Benefits” because I kept adding extra information to each class. These concepts are loosely related to the chakra system but are not typically taught as part of the subject matter. However, I have many holistic healing and metaphysics certifications and interests, so I couldn’t resist tossing in some spiritual pursuits information that I thought would be helpful.

Thus, a course that my students and I thought would last for 7 or 8 weekly sessions, took us over two months to complete, and we could have gone on much longer. It was fascinating and fun! I gave certificates of completion to those who finished all the classes.

How Did Students Feel About the Course?

I’ll quote what two of them said.

3-Month Course: Chakras With Benefits – Fall, 2022

Figure seated in the yoga lotus position with chakra colors showing. Testimonials from the FREE Root Chakra Meditation class.

“I just completed the most amazing class with Nancy Ayanna Wyatt. The Beginners Chakra Class is an overview of the body’s energy system presenting what each chakra governs and reacts to.

This is an excellent college-level course masterfully taught using a variety of teaching media from lectures to guided imagery to videos and recordings. I particularly benefited from the class exercises, discussions, and meditations. These interactive exercises provided experiential evidence of how I could personally benefit from aligning with the body’s energy system.

Nancy skillfully shared her knowledge and experience punctuated with delightful anecdotes. The amount of supplemental materials provided in addition to course content goes beyond the basics allowing for further research and the creation of individual meditations and healing practices.”

~ Ravenell W.

Nancy is an amazing teacher on so many levels. Her classes are extremely thorough and she goes above and beyond to add extra resourceful content, which I appreciate so much. She is passionate and knowledgeable and her voice alone allows you to focus and feel calm with all that she teaches. The topics are numerous and well put together. I look forward to taking more classes and enjoying learning all her different fields of expertise.

~ Rebekah B.

I couldn’t have asked for better students, but I shall offer the course again if there is sufficient interest.

Meanwhile, here is what I promised you. Note: I did not add sounds to my narrations, because you might want to:

  • have silence
  • add your own meditation music
  • add water or other nature sounds
  • and what you want might change over time and with different circumstances.

Brain Food

A Fun Way to Play with Your Food ~

Brain Food, That Is ….

Most of us know that walnuts (which bear a great resemblance to brain halves) are nature’s “brain food.” But, what I’m talking about primarily is something different. After a reminder about what constitutes “real” brain food, we’re going to look at some fun and creative ways to stimulate your brain/mind in short, daily challenges that you can keep to yourself or share on Twitter and other social media platforms.

Brain Food - a photo of halved walnuts by Mahesh Patel

According to Harvard Health. Note:  “Walnuts are high in a type of omega-3 fatty acid called alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). Diets rich in ALA and other omega-3 fatty acids have been linked to lower blood pressure and cleaner arteries. That’s good for both the heart and brain.”

This is a health blog; so, before I give you examples of “food for thought,” here is a reminder of other natural foods that are good for brain health. Continue Reading →

Chronic Pain, Absolution, VooDoo, & Help

Pain Hurts! (no kidding) What to Do About It

image shows chronic pain in back and neck of woman in ponytail

Under the auspices of the Virginia Department of Health, Prince William Area Agency on Aging, I completed the certification coursework for teaching people how to deal with chronic illness. Then, the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and the final practice classes were canceled. However, I learned about several things that influence chronic conditions, including pain, and most of them confirm what I already knew and have talked about as a certified practitioner of healing modalities over many years. You may have seen my posts or have been in my classes about:

Influences Affecting Chronic Pain Levels

  • balancing emotions – establishing methods – (e.g., physical activity, meditation, listening to music, hypnotherapy, counseling, etc.) for relieving anxiety and depression
  • breathing – shallowly or consciously, deeply, and purposefully (There are many techniques with differing emphasis on various parts of the body.)
  • evaluating nutritional intake – proper – or inflammatory and bone-deconstructing foods and drinks
  • exercising – mental (learning helpful, practical skills; keeping mentally alert; distracting oneself from pain)
  • exercising – physical (how much, when, and whether to do it while in pain) (aerobic exercise for immobile people – the chi machine)
  • making decisions – avoided or done well (with the help of a coach, counselor, or caregiver, if necessary)
  • sleeping – well or poorly (the amount needed and techniques for inducing restful sleep and for avoiding disrupted sleep. Since I’m not going into detail here, I’ll just share the link to my Sleep Like a Baby guided meditation which is available wherever you get your audio media. It put the sound engineer to sleep mid-recording session!)
  • using self-management tasks, like:
    • scheduling medications and making lists of questions for health care providers
    • acquiring tools and other aids needed to accomplish functions that used to be easy (like step stools for reaching high shelves or shoe hooks for inserting feet into shoes without having to bend down)
    • creating a plan to address emergencies
  • using holistic healing modalities, like Reiki, massage, hypnotherapy, and natural foods and herbs. Click Here for more tools and tips.

What Is Holistic Healing?

In case you don’t know what “holistic healing” means, they even supply a Glossary of terms and definitions. Actually, a whole bunch of modalities fall under the umbrella of “holistic healing” or “complementary and alternative medicine.” They run the gamut from acupuncture to healthy eating protocols, to energy healing, hypnotherapy, to essential oils and much more.

What About that Emotional Freedom Technique (aka EFT/Tapping)?

Why I Love the Emotional Freedom Technique

AKA “EFT” / “Tapping”

Are you familiar with the “Tapping” – Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) phenomenon?  This is a semi-miraculous, ritualized, way of “tapping” with your fingers on specific acupressure points on your body. You do this while speaking about topics that have caused issues for you. These may be health, financial circumstances, emotional pain, or some other theme. It even helps overcome the trauma of sexual abuse, as you will see if you keep reading.

Woman doing EFT on the under eye point. Emotional Freedom Techniques, tapping, a form of counseling intervention that draws on various theories of alternative medicine. There is nothing I like better than learning about and practicing holistic healing techniques which work without any:

  • chemicals
  • invasive procedures
  • needles
  • pharmaceutical drugs
  • needles
  • surgery
  • volatile side effects

The originally-intended use of EFT was to overhaul the psychotherapy profession. What a success! It has reduced therapy time from months or years down to minutes or hours. In that process, we discovered that people also experienced profound physical healings.

That’s why I decided to add to my certifications and learn The Emotional Freedom Technique (commonly nicknamed “EFT” or tapping”) in 2012. I also am certified in Neuro-linguistic Programming and several forms of energy medicine, so tapping was very complementary – as in Complementary and Alternative Medicine.  smiley face laughing so hard it cries

For a more formal definition, here’s one from the ever-present Wikipedia. “Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) is a form of counseling intervention that draws on various theories of alternative medicine including acupuncture, neuro-linguistic programming, energy medicine, and Thought Field Therapy.  During an EFT session, the client will focus on a specific issue while tapping on “endpoints of the body’s energy meridians.”

Your Fingernails Tell Health Stories!

See What Your Manicurist Sees When Looking at Your Fingernails!

Newly manicured nails with sparkles on pink and gold polish with a pink and gold flower in the background

The manicurist might not recognize the symptoms your fingernails portray. However, some practitioners of Eastern and Western Medicine or of Holistic Healing Modalities can identify health problems by looking at your fingernails before you cover them up with nail polish. Human fingernail types Vector illustration

Here are some resources before we continue. They help define our terms of Eastern, Western, and Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM / holistic healing). They also provide more pictures and links than I can include in this blog.

The National  Institute of Health (NIH) compares Eastern and Western approaches to medicine and health.

An easier way to understand it may be found in the blog of a person who has practiced “all of the above.” Dr. Emili Kim describes his findings.
