Swollen Ankles May Indicate Venous Insufficiency

Venous insufficiency. Swelling of the ankles and feet is often an early symptom of venous insufficiency, a condition in which blood inadequately moves up the veins from the legs and feet up to the heart. Normally, the veins keep blood flowing upward with one-way valves. When these valves become damaged or weakened, the blood leaks back down the vessels and fluid is retained in the soft tissue of the lower legs, especially the ankles and feet. Chronic venous insufficiency can lead to skin changes, skin ulcers, and infection. If you experience signs of venous insufficiency you should see your doctor. Find out more about chronic venous insufficiency.

The above quote is from Web MD, where you can learn more about this and most other health topics.

Venous Insufficiency

swollen ankle, ankle pain

According to the  Center for Vein Restoration, this condition may be related to Varicose Veins. (That website has GREAT pictures of spider veins and varicose veins to help ensure you can envision each topic and which conditions may apply to you or someone you know.)

Varicose Veins

Often painful and unsightly, varicose veins are visibly bumpy or rope-like and may occur in almost any part of the leg—most often in the back of the calf or on the inside of the leg between the groin and the ankle. Varicose veins can be sometimes be debilitating, limit a person’s mobility, and affect their quality of life.

Common Symptoms Include

leg pain

aching, or cramping

fatigued or heavy-feeling legs

itching/burning

swollen ankles

restless legs

ulcers (in severe cases)

Of course, swelling of feet and ankles can be caused by injuries or infections, and it commonly occurs during pregnancies. But, pay attention!

BLOOD CLOTS

The swelling also can be caused by blood clots. “These blood clots can be life-threatening if they break loose and travel to the heart and lungs. If you have swelling in one leg, along with pain, low-grade fever, and possibly a change in color of the affected leg, call your doctor immediately. Treatment with blood thinners may be necessary. Learn more about deep vein thrombosis (DVT).” This quote is from WebMD.

Disclaimer

I am not a physician, nor do I make any claims whatsoever about diagnosing or treating any kinds of symptoms or illnesses. I simply am sharing this information with you. What caused me to write about this topic this month is the simple fact that I’ve noticed unusual swelling in my own ankles. I do far too much sitting in front of a computer and far too much unrelenting standing while doing other chores – particularly when I’m working outdoors on property maintenance. So, I “looked myself up” and want to share what I’ve learned about swollen ankles and to tell you what remedies I’m going to try to see if they work for me. If the symptoms persist, I’ll see a physician for a diagnosis.

Teeter Hangups

The first thing that comes to mind is the Teeter Hangups – an “inversion table.” If you don’t have one, you might remember seeing that “older gentleman” hanging upside down from a contraption and then doing situps from the upside-down position. He appears to be and claims to be “the picture of health” from the benefits of regularly using this inversion table.

head and shoulder view of woman rubbing her back with orange spot indicating back pain

His is the only Inversion Table on the market that is FDA-REGISTERED as a 510(k) Medical Device. Using this is indicated for:

  • Back PainHerniated discs
  • Sciatica
  • Spinal degenerative joint disease
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Spinal curvature due to tight muscles
  • Facet syndrome
  • Muscle tension
  • Muscle spasm
  • Spinal stenosis

That says nothing about blood circulation, but the fact is that, while you’re hanging upside down like a bat in a cave, all the fluids in your body are rushing toward your heart and head. Your organs also are now “going in the opposite direction,” as opposed to going only Southward as you age. It feels wonderful, as if your organs now are back where they were during your youth. With that combination of goodness, I figure it’s worth a try.

The Teeter Hang-ups are not cheap, but what glorious relief I have felt on my back and how rejuvenated after using one. The trick is not to let it sit in a corner and become a place where you toss things while doing something else in the room.

The Famous “Chi Machine”

Sun Ancon Chi machine helps with circulation

Whereas I do not sell Teeter Hang-ups, I must disclose that I not only bought, but I do sell my Sun Ancon original chi machine. It’s a must-have for oxygenating the body when one cannot or will not get around to doing aerobic exercises.

Five minutes on this machine is equal to a half-hour walk, aerobically speaking! Thus, 10 minutes = equivalent to a 1-hour walk, etcetera. The Chi Machine is patented, trademarked, and registered as an Oxygen Exerciser / Medical Apparatus Aerobic Exerciser  It is known worldwide and was featured on The Doctors TV show,

Japanese scientist,  Dr. Shizuo Inoue, conducted 38 years of research on this process and is credited with the idea of providing a machine to swing the feet, causing a sideways oscillation of the pelvis like the undulation of a fish swimming. He understood the benefits of “passive aerobic exercise” and developed the only true Chi Machine®. He believed that lack of oxygen in the body is a primary cause of diseases, and many doctors now agree, including Nobel Prize winners, Dr. Warburg and Dr. Odeuale. You can learn much more about this on my own Chi Machine Page.

Hey, Lady, Just Tell Us How It Works!

Suffice it to say, a person (man, woman, child) just lies on his or her back, puts ankles onto the chi machine cradle, turns it on, and lets the machine gently sway the body. The outcome is that the whole body is benefiting from the increased circulation of oxygen, blood, lymph fluids, etc. So, I am betting this will help with my swollen ankles symptoms.

Regular Exercise

Of course, I could spend a lot of time exercising to see if that would help; but, let’s face it. I have so much work to do that it is 99 point 9 % sure that ain’t gonna happen. So, I’ll try these things and will let you know if they work.

If you have solved the swollen ankles problem – without medications – let us know. We’d love to hear your suggestions.

Lyme Disease – Things To Try

Thyme To Talk Lyme + More

My Lyme Story – In Brief

profile of woman in headscarf - looking down - ready for changeImagine my surprise upon waking one morning when I felt pain and a sense of paralysis in arms and legs. Instinctively, I jolted them into action, just to see if they would move. The forcing worked, so I sat up and discovered two insect bites on my left leg. One was at knee level and the other on my ankle. The knee was hugely swollen and had pockets of fluid in the area. It would not bend easily, completely, and without pain. In fact, there was pain throughout my body, and revolving pockets of swelling showed up in various joint areas over the next few weeks.

I didn’t think too much about it, since I could see no evidence of the presence of ticks, and I thought there was an equal possibility the bites were from a spider. Of course, animals carry ticks, which carry Lyme Disease.  Yes, I have four – as in 4 – Indoor/Outdoor rescue cats. However, I had been sleeping in a room which is off limits to them.

stick figure sitting with head in handSo, in typical holistic healer fashion, I did nothing about it. My days in July were consumed with visits from my Internet Service Provider as they tried everything they could think of to fix interconnectivity issues. I also was creating and teaching the last of my Fall classes. When I finally did go to a doctor, we concluded that – if it were going to kill me, I’d already be dead. We did no blood tests, and I got no prescriptions. That was a big mistake, so my first point to you is to see a physician immediately and request blood tests when you discover an insect bite.

person helping another person with caneTwo months later, the pain was increasing, and I still could not bend my leg to get into or out of bed, a car, or a chair. Then, I did get blood tests which showed I have a “really, really, really, really bad” case of Lyme, and the doctor prescribed Doxycycline. A number of people wanted to know what additional things I would do, as a holistic healer, so I started a Facebook page which is only about that topic. See this link to follow the conversation as I add more details or ideas over time.  https://www.facebook.com/Tyme2TalkLyme/.

Things To Do

Here is a summary of things I’m trying, along with the Doxycycline. NOTE: I am not diagnosing or prescribing any treatments of any kind. You should contact your health provider about ancillary activities in which you engage. I did that, and my doctor is supportive of each of the things I’m listing below. Again, get blood tests to find out if you have Lyme. I had not known it is “incurable,” and that a person ostensibly will test positive for Lyme for the rest of life. But, you can control symptoms.

Medications and Countermeasures for Lyme Disease

  1. According to two of my most respected physicians, Doxycycline is the most effective pharmaceutical drug.
    1. It can have horrific side effects, and I was terrified to take it; but, in my case the side effects were minimal.
    2. I asked for it in syrup form, initially, to aid in quick absorption. Later, I found the pills much easier to deal with (and more transportable for “road warriors” like me).
    3. It must be taken with food, so timing meals 12 hours apart must be planned.
  2. Antibiotics typically kill both good and bad bacteria in the body. We must offset them in order to have our digestive and immune systems work properly. Therefore, I made up the following regimen.
    1. Wake up and drink a cup of hot water to cleanse residues from the body.
    2. Drink 4 oz. of ASEA (more about that later) and wait 5 minutes before eating.
    3. Eat breakfast and take Doxycycline.
    4. At Mid-morning, take a probiotic pill with a cup of Activia.
    5. Take another probiotic with lunch.
    6. Take another probiotic 2 hours before dinner.
    7. Eat dinner and take the antibiotic.
    8. Eat no food for x hours before going to bed and drink 4 oz. of ASEA at bedtime.

Physical Exercise Options for Lyme Disease

  1. You need both strength training and aerobic exercise. Since I could not do traditional aerobic exercises, I chose to use the chi machine to get oxygen, blood, and lymph flowing, nurturing, and cleansing my body. It was very helpful in removing pockets of fluid and other obstacles created by the Lyme Disease. It is so easy to lie on the carpet and let the machine do the work. Ideally, you should have someone with you to help you get down and up easily.
  2. For strength training, I use free weights for upper body. I did my own “physical therapy” working daily and gently on my knee and left leg to get them to function more normally. Once I could get the knee to bend, I started using my “Perfect 10” exercise equipment to add weights at the ankle as I bent and straightened the leg from a sitting position.

Complementary and Alternative Medicine Options for Lyme Disease

  • I’ve also been sleeping on my Amethyst Biomat each night to aid in the circulation of blood, oxygen, and lymph.
  • I contacted Reverend Sandy Young, who did a Voice Print Analysis for me to see what sound wave energy frequencies I need to counteract the effect of Lyme and/or of the medication. Both Lyme and the medications can affect eyesight, so she gave me the Lyme “reciprocal” and frequencies for eyes, as well as suggesting I take beta-carotene supplements and foods.
  • I had a consultation with a doTerra representative and got some essential oils to try.
  • I’m taking Univera products for both cleansing the system and for aid in joint repair. (It’s called ReginiCare.)

What’s Next?

Because this blog now is much too long, I’ll do follow up blogs to describe the alternative methods and their results in future posts. Meanwhile, if you have suggestions about things that have worked for overcoming the symptoms of Lyme Disease, I’d love to hear about them.

I’m doing very well.  I’m still working 8 – 10 hour days, as I have been throughout this process (but I sometimes need a nap midway through). I’m almost able to stand and move normally and no longer have to pick up my left leg to drag it into and out of a vehicle. Most of the swelling is gone, and I am through taking the medication, Doxycycline. I shall continue with several of the alternative treatments and report back to you soon. Meanwhile,….

Eliminating Inflammation – What Can You Do?

Eliminating Inflammation Is Vital To Good Health and Anti-Aging

Sick woman's eyes

Gaze Into My Ruby Red Eyes!

stick_figure_qa_pc_400_clr_2391Q:  “Why does the body have inflammation?”

A.  Inflammation indicates that a body is trying to counteract things like illness, injury, dementia, allergies, stings, and stress.

It not only is a healing mechanism, but also is a valuable message to the body’s “owner” that something is wrong and needs attention.

We should LOVE our inflammation first (for telling us the body needs help) —  and then get rid of it!

There Are Several Natural Methods of Eliminating Inflammation

Gold kiliHere’s a Quick and Delicious Drink which is very helpful, because it is made with ginger.  There also is a version with green tea in the mix.  You can make this as a hot drink or as a cold beverage.  All you need is to add water; but I add it to juices, as well.

It’s called Goli kili ginger drink, and is available through Amazon.com, among other locations.

Over Time, We’ll Discuss Alternatives for Eliminating Inflammation

First Up:  Dr. Andrew Weil’s Suggestions

images

Dr. Andrew Weil

Note:  I love Dr. Andrew Weil, who currently is Director of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona.  Wikipedia has all the details; but, briefly, Dr.  Weil is world-famous for establishing the field of integrative medicine, which aims to combine alternative and conventional medicine.  He is a physician, and a research biologist, who truly understands the effects of plants on the body.

Here is a quote from his blog/web site, where you can get lots of information on a regular basis:

Optimal health does not come from a “miracle” drug or a fad diet, but is instead the result of making prudent daily decisions about how to eat, exercise, handle stress and connect with others.

One solution to inflammation is to eat and drink properly, using beneficial, anti-inflammatory foods.  Click on this picture of his Anti-Inflammatory Food Pyramid, where you can get the information by looking at the graphic.  He also has created a specific diet for you to follow.

“What Does An Anti-Inflammatory Diet Do? The anti-inflammatory diet is a blueprint for a lifetime of optimum nutrition. Simple changes in how you eat can help counteract chronic inflammation, a root cause of many serious diseases, including:

OK, you can go to Dr. Weil’s website to learn more about this and a million other subjects. Meanwhile, let’s refer to how inflammation affects/causes aging.

Inflammation and Aging Processes

Here’s a new word for you:  Senescence (/sɪˈnɛsəns/) (from Latin: senescere, meaning “to grow old”, from senex) or biological aging (also spelled biological ageing). (Thanks, Wikipedia.) I advise you to read this article only if you have sophisticated vocabulary and a serious interest in the subject.  The bottom line is that some theories of aging relate directly to the levels of inflammation and free radical damage present in the body.

Since there are so many anti-inflammatory foods, herbs, and options, and since we all want to preserve health and youthful bodies, I am going to refer you to the April My Get Well Guru newsletter for “Health Nuts” and to future posts on this My Get Well Guru website, for some quick solutions, such as the use of ginger, aloe vera, and other items, rather than writing a whole thesis on this blog.  In the meantime, let’s reduce our…

Classes – Wellness – Complementary & Alternative Medicine (CAM)

Holistic Healing / Natural Remedies

All You Need To Know … As An Introduction

As Above, So Below

As Above, So Below

As a certified practitioner of several Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) and wellness  modalities, I teach Introductory classes, which explain the concepts involved.  So, if you have ever heard the term “holistic healing,”  “Complementary and Alternative Medicine,” or “CAM,” and you wondered what the heck that means, these wellness classes provide the answers for natural ways of healing yourself – meaning non-synthetic, non-pharmaceutical, and non-surgical ways of increasing your health.

The critical thing is to penetrate the cause, not just the symptoms, of whatever the dis-ease expression is.  That involves the mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of a person, as relates to his or her physical manifestations of balance and imbalance: thus, the expression, “As Above, So Below,” but without specific religious connotations.  I have worked successfully with people of many faiths and with some who had no religious philosophies.  I also have worked successfully with many animals, and it is pretty safe to say that they had no religious beliefs of any recognizable kind.  The treatments still worked.

Because there is a lot of experiential evidence (about the efficacy of things, like acupuncture) that was not obtained via traditional Western scientific study methods, I disagree with some of Wikipedia’s conclusions. Still, see what it offers for the (partial) definition of some of these terms, as follows:

Alternative medicine is any practice that is put forward as having the healing effects of medicine, but is not founded on evidence gathered using the scientific method.[1] It consists of a wide range of health care practices, products and therapies.[2] Examples include new and traditional medicine practices such as homeopathy, naturopathy, chiropractic, energy medicine, various forms of acupuncture, Traditional Chinese medicine, Ayurvedic medicine, and Christian faith healing. The treatments are those that are not part of the conventional, science-based healthcare system,[3][4][5][6] and are not backed by scientific evidence. Complementary medicine is alternative medicine used together with conventional medical treatment in a belief, not proven by using scientific methods, that it “complements” the treatment.[n 1][1][8][9] CAM is the abbreviation for Complementary and alternative medicine.[10][11] Integrative medicine (or integrative health) is the combination of the practices and methods of alternative medicine with conventional medicine.[12]

Even the National Institutes   of Health recognizes some of the CAM modalities.  One source for learning more about Evidence Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine is the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), a division of the United States National Library of Medicine (NLM) at the National Institutes of Health. Articles are available from PubMed and PubMed Central.[5]  Click here for more info.

INTRODUCTION TO COMPLEMENTARY AND ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE

Red Rose

Did you know that ROSES have enormous healing powers?  Imagine what else you will learn!

This particular class is a four hour seminar (with breaks and snacks); but it can be an all-day seminar, too. See list of topics below. The cost is determined by number of participants, commute time and distance, etc.

In this class on wellness, we shall discuss topics, such as:

Why Anything Works = Energy!

Who and What Can Be Healed

Categories of Holistic Approaches – ingestants, physical manipulation, energy work

Some Principles, Ethics and Theory

Thoughts Are Things – how we create wellness and dis-ease through thought patterns

Sources of Messages – Clairvoyance, Clairaudience, etc.

Causes of Dis-Ease

Body as Messenger – where it hurts is a clue for healing

Correspondences – Chakras / Colors / Notes on Scale
