A Little History About Honoring Mother’s Day
Mother’s Day has roots that go back many centuries. In ancient times, people in Greece and Rome held festivals to honor powerful mother goddesses, thanking them for life, fertility, and protection. Later in Europe, Christians observed a day called “Mothering Sunday,” when families returned to their main “mother church” and often used the day to show extra love to their own mothers. Over time, this religious tradition slowly turned into a more family-focused day with small gifts and flowers.
In the United States, modern Mother’s Day grew from the work of a woman named Ann Jarvis in the 1800s, who organized groups of mothers to help improve health, sanitation, and peace after the Civil War. Her daughter, Anna Jarvis, wanted a special day to honor her mother and all mothers for their sacrifices. She organized a church service in 1908 in Grafton, West Virginia, and kept pushing leaders to recognize the day nationwide. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson made the second Sunday in May an official Mother’s Day holiday in the U.S.
