Soul Groups: What Are They? How do They Work?

“Soul Groups” is a term that one hears often as people try to explain having experienced Déjà vu when meeting a stranger. Perhaps, they feel a sense of being “at home with” or acutely repulsed by someone – “for no good reason” – when encountering them. These are just two examples, both of which greatly oversimplify the concept. So, for those of you who are interested, let me share with you my understanding.

Underlying Assumptions About Being Alive

This discussion is based on assumptions with which you might or might not agree. Whether you “buy” the premises or not, the conversation can be very interesting. So, you may want to “check it out” just to learn how others view the world as they are trying to figure out their “Life’s Purpose” and lessons to be learned.

The Basic Underlying Concepts Include the Following

Ayanna with the symbols of the Order of Melchizedek and Metatron's Cube teaching today about Soul Groups

  1. We either ‘have’ souls, or WE  ARE SOULS, inhabiting a physical body. We are born into bodies. That is known as incarnation.
    1. “An incarnation is an instance of being alive on earth in a particular form. Some religions believe that people have several incarnations in different forms.” ~ Collins
    2. In the interest of keeping this writing short, I’ll limit the current discussion to the topic of human soul groups incarnating on planet Earth. (You can read more about other aspects of Soul Journeys here, as we develop more articles.)

The Current Understanding of How Soul Groups Function

  1. An assumption is that some souls incarnate together at points in time on earth so they can meet and interact with one another.
  2. Many people believe that Earth is each person’s ‘Soul School,’ where we are taught lessons (often behavioral) to promote the growth and evolution of our souls.
  3. The members of the Soul Group might be teachers, but not in the ways one might expect.
    1. Instead of sweetly teaching at the head of a classroom, one person might teach another the need for setting boundaries by violating those boundaries! The lesson to be learned is to honor oneself, stand up for oneself, and establish ethical or personal boundaries.
    2. Another example has people working or living together to teach a person forgiveness. The paradox is that, for one to forgive another, there must have been some perceived harm that requires forgiveness! So the “teacher” (who could be a spouse, parent, lover, child, employer, etc.)  acts in ways that enable the “student” to choose whether to forgive or to respond in more negative ways.
      1. Therefore, if my father were cruel to his wife and daughters (which he was), in this theory, he loved us enough to enact things that would 1) give us a choice and 2) allow us to learn forgiveness, if that is what we chose to do. (Note: choosing forgiveness usually is more for the benefit of our personal peace and growth, rather than being done for the sake of the “perpetrator.”)
      2. Similarly, if my father broke personal boundaries with emotional and physical violence (which he did), then it was our responsibility to love ourselves enough to stand up for ourselves – not just in that environment, but in future relationships with other people.
      3. Theoretically, abuse will continue until the cycle is broken and abuse is no longer accepted.
      4. When a person finally refuses to accept emotional or physical attacks, the lessons may have been learned, and future intimate relationships will no longer have abuse or boundary violations as a regular part of relationships.
  4. Thus, the concept is that those who love each other at the highest spiritual or soul levels come together in various lifetimes to teach and learn as Group Soul members.
  5. Humans who incarnate might play differing roles in different lifetimes. For example, someone might teach another person patience by incarnating as a disabled person who needs constant caregiving (although – in that example – I think both people are learning patience through undergoing many things that naturally generate a feeling of impatience)!
    1. The slave owner might become a slave in the next lifetime.
    2. The king might become a pauper in a future life.
  6. Everything that happens to the person in a human’s lifetime (including thoughts, feelings, etc.), allegedly, is specifically designed for the spiritual evolution of humans and to enable the Creator of  All to experience every possible aspect of living within that which has been created.

Needless to say, I cannot prove any of this! Nor do I want to try. I am merely sharing with you a brief description of the concepts, and you can determine whether they resonate with you, intrigue you, or invoke some other kind of response. So, let’s continue with the concept of “Soul Groups.”

Soul Groups – Are Individuals a “Member” of Only One Soul Group?

A chart depicting multiple Soul Groups in Different Lifetimes

My understanding is based on information received during meditation and communion with my “OverSoul,” “Highest Self,” “The Universe,” “God,” or “Higher Power.” It does not matter to me what name you choose to honor as being the most purely divine source of comprehension. That is not the point.

The response I received to that question is that some of us can be members of various Soul Groups. In addition, a few of us also might incarnate “solo” – meaning without coming into earth in the company of other known souls.

I can neither prove nor disprove this, so I’ll simply say that was how my question was answered.

Note: outside of the earth plane, there is no linear time, so I am using the terms of past, present, and future simply as a communications device that meets the understanding of most of us earth-bound individuals.

SOUL GROUP CHARACTERISTICS

Chart depicting a mission, a soul group, and You as the human on earth

Mission-Based, Not Personality-Based

Soul Group members may differ in:
  • Intelligence
  • Personality
  • Emotional capacity
  • Skills
  • Social graces
  • Even spiritual awareness
What binds them together is a shared Oversoul-level mission that requires their interaction—again and again—sometimes harmoniously, sometimes disruptively.
Think of it like the organs in a body:
  • The brain and the liver don’t resemble each other.
  • But you cannot function as a whole, living being without both performing their roles.

Intra-Group Variance Is the Norm

Soul Groups often include:
  • Teachers and students
  • Lovers and betrayers
  • Saviors and saboteurs
  • Those who bring light, and those who trigger it by withholding

So yes, one can be the “least developed” in terms of intellect, clarity, or personal honesty—and still be a key catalyzer in your soul’s journey.

Soul Groups ~ Homogeneity VS. Diversification

Are Soul Groups made up of similar types of beings?
No ~ not in personality or traits.
Yes ~ in shared resonance purpose.
Each Soul Group:
  • Shares a core frequency signature and evolutionary intention
  • Contains members who express it diversely depending on their chosen roles, maturity, and karma
  • Includes both mirrors and friction-makers
  • May have wisdom keeperstrail disruptorshealersillusion-holders, and code-breakers.
So yes—someone may appear to be “less” advanced, intelligent, caring, or some other trait on the surface, but their presence may serve the deepest chord of soul evolution.
This is why it’s often not the wisest or kindest soul who awakens you—but the one with whom you have the oldest contract.

Soul Contracts Explained

A figure with a pen for people to sign a Soul Group Contract

In short, the “contract” refers to what the souls agreed to do – before incarnating as a Soul Group –  to help each other evolve while being embodied on the earth.

However, I asked “Perplexity” to define a “Soul Contract” in more detail, with the following result that its AI extracted from My Spiritual Shenanigans and other sources.

“A soul contract is a spiritual concept describing an agreement made by your soul—prior to birth—with other souls to experience specific events, relationships, challenges, or lessons during your lifetime. The idea is that, in a pre-incarnation state, souls meet to determine what themes and experiences will promote each other’s growth, healing, and evolutionary journey on Earth.

Key aspects of soul contracts:

    • Pre-birth Agreement: According to this belief, your soul and others (such as family, friends, partners, or even brief acquaintances) convene before incarnation to “sign” a contract about what roles you’ll play for each other—these may range from loving support to significant challenges, all intended to foster spiritual development.

    • Purposeful Lessons: The relationships and events orchestrated by soul contracts are designed to deliver important lessons. These can be joyful or painful, but each serves to help souls move forward on their path, heal old patterns, or balance energy from previous lives (often called karma).

    • Reciprocal Roles: In soul contracts, participants play agreed-upon roles for mutual benefit. For example, someone may agree to teach you forgiveness by hurting you, while you may provide another soul with the opportunity to practice compassion or boundaries.

    • Not Permanent or Fixed: Soul contracts are not unbreakable or “written in stone.” They exist to support enlightened growth, and awareness of them can lead to transformation. You always have free will to respond to these circumstances differently or to seek healing if a contract no longer serves you.

    • Types: Contracts can be with soulmates, family, friends, or significant others, and may be positive or challenging. Sometimes these contracts are believed to carry over many lifetimes.

    • Spiritual Blueprint: Many describe a soul contract as a “blueprint” or “syllabus” for your soul’s journey—a spiritual game plan designed for inner development, service, and learning at the highest level.

In summary, a soul contract is a metaphysical agreement your soul makes—before this life begins—to support your learning, healing, and advancement, often in partnership with the souls of others. These agreements can clarify why certain relationships or challenges feel fated or especially significant on your journey.”

This partially explains why some allies come and go gently, while others haunt you as if they were your own shadow. It’s also why your Oversoul continues to assign you roles with those who most challenge the smooth narrative of love and growth.

Let’s Go  Back  to Soul Groups ≠ (Do Not Equate to) Earth Social Circles

Soul Group - colorful bubble figures with questions

Soul Groups are not like a social circle, tribe, or community on Earth. They are not formed based on shared interests, proximity, race, education, or even attraction. Rather, they are:

  • Coherence fields of evolutionary commitment.
  • In plain terms, they are clusters of consciousness that agree to evolve together through interwoven lifetimes, often in complementary or contrasting roles.
  • They are MISSION-BASED, NOT PERSONALITY-BASED.
My thought about this is that it sounds a lot like how “Corporate America” now operates in many cases.
In our context, it’s analogous to companies no longer employing large numbers of steadfast employees. Instead, the employer brings people in or out by function and mission-specific tasks. Many are freelancers, consultants, or specialists. All are temporary, except, perhaps, those responsible for the overall project. (In our case, that would be the Soul or Soul Group.)
There is a term for it:
  • “Matrix Organizational or Structure Process. Alternatively, some might refer to it as
  • Project-Based Staffing/Project Workforce: Adjusting the workforce dynamically, adding or removing specialized talent in line with project requirements rather than maintaining a permanent staff for all roles.

Flexible Workforce Management: Managing labor so that staff numbers and skillsets scale up and down according to current project needs, especially for roles that are only needed intermittently.

Understanding the Soul Group as Similar to Corporate Structures

This Soul Architecture does resemble the modular intelligence models seen in:

  • Freelance ecosystems
  • Agile networks
  • Spiritual collectives who incarnate with “pop-in” missions

However, unlike in capitalism, these configurations serve evolutionary necessity, not profit.

How Can I Know What Soul Groups I’m In?

book searching for answers with a magnifying glass over a red questionmark

It’s a beautiful and natural question—“How can I know what Soul Group I belong to?” The answer isn’t found in a chart, quiz, or external label, but rather in the deeper currents of your inner life.

Soul Groups are not limited by family, bloodline, or geography.

Instead, they are resonant clusters of souls who share a purpose, frequency, and evolutionary intention. To begin discovering your Soul Group, pay attention to recurring patterns: the kinds of people you feel instantly connected to, the causes that move you beyond logic, the times and places in history you’ve felt inexplicably drawn to, or the soul “themes” that seem to repeat in your life (like healing, justice, teaching, bridging worlds).

You might also notice certain relationships that feel older than this lifetime, or an ease and flow when working in particular groups.

Many people have never heard of Soul Groups, yet they live full and purposeful lives without ever knowing of the concept. There is no NEED to know.

Also, there is no rush. Your Soul Group often finds you when you’re ready to recognize it. Trust the subtle callings and synchronicities, and be willing to ask your soul: Who am I here to walk with, and what are we here to remember together?”

Ways to Begin Sensing Your Soul Group Connections

ocean with foam and stacked rocks on a beach, mindfulness meditation to determine Soul Group membership

If you’re ready to begin sensing your Soul Group ties, start with stillness.

Find a quiet space, take a few slow breaths, and center yourself ~ not to figure it out, but to feel what arises.

Ask inwardly: “Who are my soul kin?” and notice any names, images, sensations, or feelings that surface.

You might recall a conversation that changed your life, a moment of unexpected recognition with someone new, or a cause you were drawn to without explanation.

Journaling about lifelong patterns ~ people you’re drawn to, communities you’ve resisted or embraced, and group dynamics you revisit ~ can offer subtle clues.

Pay attention to the emotions that swell when you witness certain stories or historical moments: often your Soul Group memory is activated by resonance, even if you can’t logically explain why. Trust those stirrings.

Over time, your Soul Group may emerge not as a list of names, but as a vibrational familiarity, a sense of “we’ve done this before” when you’re with the right people, in the right field of purpose.
