Water – Does It Come Out the Same?
The Short Answer
For almost all practical home uses (drinking, cooking, coffee, bathing, and everyday hydration), RO water is the functional equivalent of distilled water. However, for specialized technical, medical, or lab uses (like CPAP machines, automotive batteries, or formal laboratory work that requires 100% mineral-free H20), RO water is NOT a total replacement for distilled water.
How They Work: Comparing Water Purification Methods
Water Processed by Reverse Osmosis (Mechanical Filtration)
RO works by forcing tap water under high pressure through an ultra-fine, semi-permeable membrane. The pores in the membrane are roughly 0.0001 microns wide. They are small enough to let water molecules pass through while stripping away 95% to 99% of dissolved solids, minerals, heavy metals, microplastics, and chemicals.
Water Processed by Distillation (Thermal Phase Change)
Distillation mimics the natural rain cycle. Water is boiled into steam, leaving virtually all contaminants, heavy metals, and minerals behind in the boiling chamber. The steam is then captured, cooled, and condensed back into a pure liquid. Distillation removes 99.9% of all impurities.

Can You Substitute RO Water for Distilled Water?
YES and NO.
When RO Water IS fine to use:

Drinking & Cooking: RO water tastes significantly better than distilled water because it isn’t completely “dead” or flat, while still removing toxic contaminants like lead, nitrates, arsenic, and PFAS (“forever chemicals”).

Humidifiers & Steam Irons: RO water works very well to prevent mineral scale buildup compared to raw tap water, though a tiny bit of mineral dust may eventually form over long periods.

Aquariums: RO water provides a clean slate for freshwater or saltwater tanks (often combined with a DI filter).
You MUST Use True “Store-Bought” Distilled Water for the Following:

Medical Devices (CPAP Machines / Neti Pots): CPAP manufacturers specifically require distilled water to prevent bacteria growth in warm reservoirs and to ensure zero mineral dust enters your airways.

Car Batteries & Cooling Systems: Lead-acid batteries require 100% pure water to prevent internal plate corrosion. Even 5 ppm of dissolved minerals in RO water can degrade battery cell life over time.

Autoclaves & Sterilizers: Medical instruments require zero-mineral steam to keep internal valves from scaling and clogging.

Formal Lab Experiments: Any chemistry application where exact dissolved solid counts must be absolute zero.
A Note on “Remineralization” of Water
If an RO system has a remineralization stage enabled, its output will move further away from distilled water in terms of purity counts, making it even better for drinking, but unsuitable for appliances requiring zero-mineral water.
Well Water Versus City/County Water Systems
Reverse Osmosis (RO) systems are strongly recommended for both private well water and municipal (city/county) water, but for completely different reasons. Because municipal utilities and private wells carry fundamentally different water risks, how an RO system is deployed and maintained depends heavily on your water source.
RO Systems for Private Well Water
Private well owners are entirely responsible for their own water safety. They are unregulated by the EPA. Groundwater fluctuates seasonally and is vulnerable to runoff.
Primary Threats to Water Helped by RO Include:

Agricultural Runoff: Nitrates, nitrites, pesticides, and fertilizers.

Heavy Metals: Naturally occurring arsenic, lead, copper, and radium in surrounding soil/rock.

Microbiological Hazards: E. coli, coliform bacteria, and parasites from nearby septic tanks or livestock.
Crucial Warning for Well Owners: Not All Water Is “Created Equal.”

Pre-Filtration is Mandatory: High iron, manganese, or hard water minerals (calcium) will permanently clog and “foul” an RO membrane in a matter of weeks. Wells almost always require a water softener or dedicated iron filter upstream of the RO system.

Bacterial Risks: RO systems are mechanical filters, not primary purifiers. If your well tests positive for bacteria, you must install a UV Disinfection Light or chlorination system before relying on RO for safe drinking water.
RO Systems for City / County Water
Primary Threats Addressed by RO:

Disinfection Byproducts (DBPs): Chloramines, trihalomethanes, and haloacetic acids created when chlorine reacts with organic matter.

Aging Distribution Infrastructure: Lead from legacy city lines or home plumbing, as well as rust and heavy metals.

Emerging Contaminants: PFAS (“forever chemicals”), pharmaceuticals, microplastics, and excess fluoride that standard municipal treatments do not completely remove.

Aesthetic Quality: Removes the harsh taste and chemical odor of chlorine/chloramines.

Best Practice Recommendation

If on City Water: A point-of-use (under-sink) RO system is usually an easy, plug-and-play installation that significantly improves drinking water safety and taste.

If on Well Water: Always conduct an independent comprehensive water test first. Ensure you address hardness, high iron, and potential bacteria via whole-house pre-treatment before sending water through an under-sink RO system.
Note from the author: I have well water only and did not know about these requirements before I purchased a COUNTER TOP Reverse Osmosis machine. That’s why I’m sharing this blog, as that investment may prove fool hardy if the extremely hard water from my system damages the unit.
