What the Experts Say About 2021-2022 Flu Season
What is the Definition of Seasonal Flu / Influenza?
(“Flu” is the abbreviation commonly used for “Influenza.”)
According to the World Health Organization (WHO),
Seasonal influenza is an acute respiratory infection caused by influenza viruses which circulate in all parts of the world. It represents a year-round disease burden. It causes illnesses that range in severity and sometimes lead to hospitalization and death.
Most people recover from fever and other symptoms within a week without requiring medical attention. However, influenza can cause severe illness or death, particularly among high risk groups including the very young, the elderly, pregnant women, health workers and those with serious medical conditions.
Is It Flu or Allergies?
As a person who
a) lives in a wooded community and
b) has been diagnosed as being allergic to trees, shrubs, and grasses,
I often have occasion to wonder whether I have the flu or allergies. Thus, I researched and wrote about it. Click Here to see that post.
When is the “Regular Flu” Season?
In temperate climates, seasonal epidemics occur mainly during winter, while in tropical regions, influenza may occur throughout the year, causing outbreaks more irregularly. ~ WHO
Flu season is here. In the United States, it usually ramps up in October and is the worst between December and February.
Note: I am not a medical doctor and am not providing medical advice. Instead, I’m sharing educational and informational experts about this year’s round of flu. The following is an excerpt from an article on the subject, in the Washington Post.
Flu viruses may also roar back with more opportunities to spread this fall and winter in reopened schools, workplaces and businesses, especially where masks are not mandated. Hospitals already battling simultaneous pediatric spikes in covid-19 and RSV fear oxygen and staffing will be stretched thin if flu and coronavirus admissions surge together in the months ahead — a dreaded scenario they avoided during the last winter surge.
Why Do Docs Recommend Flu Shots and Who Should Get Them?
Expert medical researchers and physicians say that getting an annual flu shot/vaccine is the BEST way to help prevent catching the flu and can reduce serious complications that may result in hospitalization or even death.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), for children, getting an annual flu vaccine can even be lifesaving. It recommends a yearly flu vaccine for everyone 6 months and older (including pregnant people).
A flu vaccine can still reduce your risk of becoming seriously ill from flu and even dying from it. In addition, getting your flu vaccine will also help keep you out of the hospital, leaving the beds for COVID-19 patients and others who need them.
For years, I chose not to get the flu vaccine. I made that decision because reports were that the then-current vaccine was based on previous years’ varieties of the flu, not whatever strain was now in play.
However, a physician convinced me that, if I got the flu shot AND the flu, the flu symptoms would be greatly reduced compared to the situation had I not been vaccinated for influenza.
With the advent of the COVID-19 virus, I now get both vaccines, not wanting to “mix and match” illnesses nor to “play Russian Roulette” with my life and health.
Yes, You Can Get the “Regular Flu” and the COVID-19 Virus at the Same Time!
I’m sure you already know that the CDC, the WHO, and other medical professionals highly recommend getting the full number of doses of the vaccinations for COVID.
Millions of people all over the world now have taken these vaccines with predictable results.
Those who are vaccinated either avoid COVID-19 or have demonstrably lighter symptoms.
The comparatively few deaths that have occurred have been in people who had additional physical challenges which overcame the ability of the immune system to prevail.
Getting your shots is especially important these days because you can get sick with COVID-19 and flu at the same time, as experts expect both to spread this fall/winter.

For reasons beyond comprehension, my Reiki link is not working. Consequently, it will have to suffice to say Reiki is a form of energy work that can be done in person and remotely. It has been effective enough that many hospitals and other medical practices allow its use in their facilities for people and for animals.
